VMware, the market leader in virtualization software, and LeaseWeb, one of Europe’s largest business hosting providers, have signed a strategic cooperation agreement.
The agreement will allow LeaseWeb clients to rent rather than buy VMware software for their Web environments. As the European VSPP, LeaseWeb will be present with an exhibition stand in the vCloud pavilion during VMworld Europe 2009 in Cannes from February 24 through 26.
Virtual Server
The cooperation between VMware and LeaseWeb will be handled through the VMware Service Provider Program (VSPP) of VMware. This program provides for a select number of top hosting providers to supply licenses for virtual servers on the basis of periodic rental agreements. LeaseWeb clients will benefit through easier access to, and greater flexibility in the use of, virtualized hosting.
VMware Hosting at LeaseWeb
“This cooperation will allow us to provide our hosting clients with virtualized dedicated servers in a quick and scalable manner,” says Con Zwinkels, LeaseWeb’s managing director. “LeaseWeb clients will have the ability to pay their licensing fees periodically, ‘by virtual server by month.’ Thus, they will no longer have to make costly start-up investments for virtualized hosting. The partnership program will therefore make it much easier for our clients to switch to a virtualized hosting environment.”
The ability to sign periodic rental agreements will also add flexibility to virtualized hosting solutions. Zwinkels: “This will allow our clients to quickly adapt their Web infrastructure to their current needs. Furthermore, it will make their Web infrastructure highly scalable and eliminate the hassle of having to deal with complex licensing models. The ability to rent also improves the efficiency of virtualized hosting environments. Clients only pay for actual use.”
Hosting Enterprise
LeaseWeb has developed a VMware-based virtualization platform. The virtualization platform is especially attractive for Web environments in the enterprise market and the higher segment of small- and medium-size businesses. “A virtualized hosting environment based on VMware can offer them significant advantages,” says Zwinkels. “VMware is state-of-the-art virtualization software and therefore ideal for use in enterprise environments and larger business environments. The design of the VMware platform on which the virtual server runs provides a high level of scalability and availability of the Web environment. Migrating virtual dedicated servers to other servers is also much simpler, and it will not affect the applications.”
LeaseWeb’s virtualization platform and other hosting services will be demonstrated at an exhibition stand in the vCloud pavilion in the Palais des Festivals in Cannes, France, during VMworld Europe 2009 from February 24 through 26. LeaseWeb is one of the sponsors of the vCloud pavilion, along with Cisco, Intel, Logica, Atos Origin, and other companies.
Virtual Hosting: VSPP
Hosting providers are a key target market for VMware. For this reason, on June 6, 2007 the manufacturer of virtualization software abandoned the old ‘pay-per-socket’ model and introduced the VMware Service Provider Program (VSPP) specifically for top hosting providers. Under this partnership program, clients only pay licensing fees based on actual usage. This will benefit LeaseWeb’s clients in both the enterprise and small- and medium-size business sectors. Disadvantages of the old licensing model included the high start-up costs, and limitations in terms of efficiency and flexibility.
